Johnny Smith is an experienced animation and live action screenwriter. Recent work includes the Sky Movies film, Dragon Rider starring Patrick Stewart, Felicity Jones and Freddie Highmore. With Rob Sprackling he created the Annie nominated, Disney film Gnomeo & Juliet starring James McAvoy, Michael Caine, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, Jason Statham and Patrick Stewart (with music by Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice) and The Queen’s Corgi for NWave/Montecito. He co-wrote the UK feature film Mike Bassett: England Manager and the TV spin-off Mike Bassett: Manager for ITV.
Johnny was Lead Writer on the CBBC show Muddle Earth starring David Jason. He also wrote the pilot for the relaunched Danger Mouse series for the BBC and has written on many pre-school and middle grade TV shows. He has written four books for Scholastic – in the aptly named John Smith is Not Boring series. Johnny is a former finalist of the BBC radio play competition.
Future projects include an adaptation of a Terry Pratchett novel for Cantilever and the Philip Pullman novella I was a Rat for Flickerpix. Johnny is currently working on an adaptation of Great Expectations set in South Wales in the 1980’s, during the sell-off of council houses.
Johnny lives in London with his wife, Lottie, and daughters, Daisy and Flo.
